about

What to say about the 2009 Snohawk? At this point, I can only really go by what I remember, but I do know that this one represented a step forward (relatively speaking) into how these compilations would be created, henceforth (save for the year immediately following this where I stubbornly attempted to not do one). I think this seemed like an apex to me and definitely also seemed like a lot of work at an otherwise busy time (hence my reticence the following year). That said, many things such as the iconic Craig Horky cover art, the recording process calcifying at GTG, and the number of submissions all sort of hit a classic note they'd repeat on the best years following this one.

A few random notes from what I DO remember since I don't remember a ton of specifics on this one:

1) There are some seriously well-developed, progressive (again, relatively speaking) tracks here... and a more diverse selection musically. This is the quadruple-gatefold prog-Snohawk.

2) Memorably beautiful Breakups track at #6. Another all-time Snohawk favorite of mine.

3) Dualing submissions from the co-vocalists (at the time) of one of my favorite underrated BMP bands, The Matadors of Shame (Anthony Adani and Andrew Amato)

4) I remember less about the Reindeer Moron track than the inspiration for its name, which was a note one of our neighbors left on Otis's van that started, "Dear Moron, ..." (you can imagine where it went from there)

5) Four Words: Neon Tuesday Rookie Card (hold onto this collectible kiddos)

6) I think recall being concerned this one was going to be a little short on tracks... boy was I wrong.

7) Really fun raucous, snotty submission from tCF's Toledo partners-in-crime, The Infernal Names.

8) We were lucky any year Johnny Unicorn graced the comp. The track on this one is just an exceptional holiday song by holiday song standards... not just by Snohawk standards.

From Tommy:
"I have some great memories of this year... I know I recorded parts of the Dan Fox, Plurals, and Reindeer Moron songs while pretty much blacked out. Apparently after the Reindeer Moron song was done I got on the drums and, per Horky and Grover, started playing and singing album cuts from Live's third album."
