about

Ah, 2010. The year that Tommy McCord and GTG Records saved Christmas...

This was the year I was ready to retire Snohawk in the midst of one of the BMP's two vaunted "supplemental income" years some of you may have heard me speak of in hushed tones. Anyway, the idea of putting an entire month on hold when we had tons of releases and shows going on just to see another Snohawk to the finish line seemed kind of impossible (also keeping in mind this was all on top of a day-job and one of the Cartridge Family's last really busy years happening to coincide with one of Cavalcade's first). Little did I know what was going on a few blocks away at the corner of Grand River and Otto.

I remember this stupid-well for eight years having passed, but the exact moment I knew that the momentum of Snohawk had gotten to be such that I couldn't single-handedly curb it was when we were loading a van in my backyard for a Cartridge Family show in Toledo in December of 2010. Tommy was "performing" with us that night and he presented me with a CD, telling me it was this' year's Snohawk. "What??? How? ..."

The GTG crew wasn't ready to let the tradition rest and -- while this is a stopgap, EP-length compilation (by Snohawk standards) that I suspect (beyond the Dan Fox and Hat Madder songs) is almost entirely written and performed by the same 7-8 people Tommy has been in bands with or is related to (in spite of the different band names) -- it's probably one of the most important to the tradition.

Nothing that happened after this might have happened without Tommy Claus & the GTG elves plugging away in their Holiday workshop in secret in 2010. I am grateful for their efforts and just realized I still have a lot of questions about what exactly was going on here (i.e. "Pranks Sand Fearnest"? Was Frank & Earnest really worried they were going to get in trouble for playing with a slight member deviation? It's not like they were under contract with Capitol records and couldn't use the name w/out the regular lineup or on a compilation not affiliated with some corporate entity that owned them... anyway, as I will, you can direct any such questions to gtgrecords at gma1l dot com)
